My friend Gretchen texted me with an idea the morning after the debate that elicited the response "What a nasty woman..."
Everyone had used the Janet Jackson song "Nasty" as the basis of their memes, but Gretchen noted that Vanity 6's "Nasty Girl" is much more empowering. Brenda's hair on Elizabeth Warren threw people for a loop in the comments section. But whatevs. I realize that my metric for success these days is whether Questlove likes something.
"GANGSTA WAGNER" was created as part of the 2010 Ring Festival LA. It was commissioned by Grand Performances and LA Opera. Produced by GG, performed by daKAH Hip Hop Orchestra.
In WWII, Wagner's music was Hitler's gangsta rap. The album concept was to embrace the sinister sounds of Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle, and combine it with the hard sound of early 1990s rap music.
The imagery (using photographs, stencils, spray paint and finally photoshop) was used on advertising and for the CD packaging.
