The I HEAR YOU project gives voice to refugees from Syria, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo who cannot speak for themselves due to threat of violence. They have left everything behind for a chance to survive.
Their names and faces have been changed but their words have not.
MARGOT - LAW STUDENT
The Law Student left everything behind in Aleppo...her books, school work, her best friend...she wants to fight for the oppressed. But how can she, when she is the oppressed?
JOHN - TEACHER
The Teacher shouldn't be teaching in the camp, host countries tend to view teachers suspiciously...they might be "radicalizing the youth." Nope, he's teaching them to read by drawing in the dirt.
MINNIE - STAY-AT HOME MOM
The Stay-at-Home Mom has a really smart kid who wants to be a doctor, but his education is wasting away just sitting there, year after year in the camp.
GAEL - POET
The Poet tells us a story from his college days about falling for a girl much above his social standing.
AL - PRACTICAL JOKER
The Practical Joker likes to tell funny stories about playing pranks on his younger brother. But when they had to decide whether they would stay together as a family or split up to survive, it's no laughing matter.
ANNA - SURVIVOR
The Survivor seems shallow at first, focusing on getting her hair done and having a pretty dress made, but that belies the terrible journey she has been on. These small things are her way of fighting her way out of depression and returning to the happiest moments of her life...the few months she was married.
MELISSA - MATRIARCH
A Grandmother tries to keep her grandchildren on track in the camp. But it's hard to keep them in a tent.
JORDANA - NURSE
The Nurse's family was so proud of her for good grades. Now they're proud of her for keeping the family fed. Things change.
ERIK - FAMILY MAN
The BBQ Guy wants to invite you to his house for a cook out. It'll have to be a rain check since right now he's living with his wife, kids, sister's kids, in laws, parents. One tent.
YASMINE - 10 YEAR OLD
A Future Doctor tells us about what she likes and doesn't like. Spoiler: she doesn't like being a refugee.
ARI - ENGINEER
The Engineer has fun wherever she goes: college, work, even here in the camp where she married the love of her life. But she has to rely on memories instead of photos.
ANDREA - SOCIALITE
The Socialite had it all. She even had more than you do. Now she has nothing. And it all changed in an instant. Could the same happen in your country? To you?
OLIVER - STORE OWNER
The Store owner tells us about a fateful dinner with his friend who owns the bakery next to his shop.
MEGALYN - TEACHER
The Preschool Teacher has 88 three year olds in her class. You heard me right.
