The Uninvited Guest (2018)

36”x48” Acrylic on canvas

On one of our picnics in Griffith Park, a coyote came loping out of the woods and onto the lawn surveying the picnic-ers. A nearby group was celebrating a birthday and fed the coyote a plate of cake. At first, it may seem like the title refers to the coyote as the uninvited guest, but the more you know about the impacts of human encroachment on wildlife you know that we are the uninvited guest.

The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery’s theme of Offal for their 2019 show, reminded me of the time I got to see my own innards, during my c-section. The doctor asked if I wanted to see the birth of my son and I replied "no, thank you" but he automatically wheeled up a mirror so I could see beyond the curtain. After they removed my son from my belly, I mistakenly looked back into the mirror. It looked like a kitchen sink full of blood and unknown shapes. Depicted is the moment where the doctor was pushing on my stomach with his fist, while the other doctor wrenched my 10lb son out of the incision.

The painting is unfinished as of yet, but I plan to continue working on the baby, hands and belly and leave the rest close to how you see, since the baby isn't completely finished being born yet either.
